Many strong real estate businesses are built on referrals, but getting your clients to recommend you is easier said than done. Is there an art to referrals?

One big reason people don't refer family and friends is the fear that the person or business they refer them to will provide poor service and that would reflect back onto them so often it's easier to simply stay silent. To overcome that an agent must do several things. They must provide 'extra' ordinary service to the client. The kind of service that makes them want to do their friends and family a 'favour' by sending them to you. An agent must also 'ask' for the referral AND ensure that they tell that client that anyone they refer will receive top level, even special service because you understand the importance of both your own and the clients reputation. Lastly, it's important to recognize the referral with a personal call, card or gift. This has worked OK for me over the years.
