Postcards - how thick, how shiny?

I've used postcard drops for some time now - to be honest I don't know how well they work, but other agents in my area are using them. I gues the question is how much do I HAVE to spend on them? By the time I've gone up in card weight and added a gloss finish the costs mount up.

I've got a deal so they're only $79 per thousand for printing, but it soon adds up by the time they're delivered. What does anyone think? Are they worth it? Can yu get away just with printing on paper?

If you print on paper, you'll need to get envelopes too, and that will start adding up. You can always go with a matte finish, but I'd stick to cardstock. Otherwise, if you do go with regular paper, you're into flyer territory and I've never had much luck with flyers.
