The risks of remaining at the wrong brokerage

In what is an increasingly uncertain real estate market, top producing agents are in hot demand. New laws and rule changes are bringing a new complexity to the industry and leading brokerages are doing whatever it takes to snap up the top talent.

However, some top agents are reluctant to move on to new opportunities at new brokerages. Whether it’s due to a fear of change or simply an aversion to stepping out of their comfort zones, these agents are most likely restricting their own growth potential with such attitudes. Not moving on when the time is right is an error that many agents have made.

“These types of agents may never reach their peak potential,” says Nirmal Brar, Broker Manager of Royal LePage Flower City Realty. “If they are not testing themselves and joining an ambitious brokerage they are likely to missing out on a whole lot. They may be comfortable, and feel like they are the best performing agent in their brokerage, but in reality they are wasting the potential they have.”

Any agent that is afraid to step out of their comfort zone is likely to suffer in the most important area: profitability. Not having the ability or courage to better oneself could be a warning sign for agents in what is an increasingly competitive industry.

“Any agent who has been at the same level for the past two years is missing out on something,” says Brar. “We’re in a business where an agent should improve every year if they are doing things right. The industry is based on referrals and that is something that should increase every year. If they are not, it means you are not doing something right. In those situations, an agent should analyze themselves to see what they are doing wrong. In many cases, joining a new brokerage could be the change that an agent needs.”
