IN FOCUS: What to expect from a leading brokerage

When an agent needs to leave their current brokerage

Nov 20, 2017
Taking the time to evaluate your career is a must in the modern market. Getting stale at a brokerage or sticking with an organization that lacks ambition or direction is something that all real estate agents should avoid. Sometimes moving to a brokerage whose ethos and ambitions match your own is the best – and only – option

“The main reason that a real estate agent might decide it’s time to leave their current brokerage is if they are not receiving the level of support they need,” says Nirmal Brar, Broker Manager of Royal LePage Flower City Realty. “Training is another important aspect: is the brokerage proving the agent with the training to help them improve every year? If not, it’s probably a sensible decision for an agent to start thinking about moving on.”

In order to determine whether they are receiving the adequate levels of support and training from their brokerage, an agent first needs to take a close look at their own methods and performance. They need to examine their own figures and see how they compare to industry averages.

“Where do they stand; if they are behind, they need to analyze why they are behind,” Brar says. “That is one of the main things to do. Again, this might come back to the agent not getting the training and guidance needed to help them progress and become a top producer.”

If an agent does appear to be lagging the competition, it’s probably a good idea to think about joining a brokerage that better suits them and their ambitions. “As well as joining a brokerage with better support and training, change is often a great motivator for someone who is not achieving their full potential,” Brar says. “Joining a new brokerage can give an agent the push they need to move on to the next level.”
