One of Canada’s largest real estate networks has helped expand a program to help children with accessibility issues enjoy Halloween.
RE/MAX helped launch the Accessible Trick or Treating program in 2018, offering free signs for homeowners to display when they make a pledge to make their properties accessible by handing out treats from the garage or foot of the driveway.
The firm says that with around 400,000 children in Canada with accessibility issues, many face the prospect of being left at the curb while siblings and friends make their way through narrow passageways, up staircases, or past crowded front entrances.
The idea of orange signs that homeowners can display to show they are making their home accessible for those trick or treaters with challenges, came from on Ontario homeowner Rich Padulo in 2017 who created a sign for his own home.
In 2018, RE/MAX bought 2,500 signs to distribute across Ontario and this year the firm is expanding the program nationwide with more than 20,000 signs.
They will be available from October 20 at Home Depot Canada stores nationwide except Quebec in association with Treat Accessibly.
